Latitude 53 invites you to Visualeyez 2011, the 12th edition of Canada’s annual performance art festival, from September 13–18. Stay tuned to this website for festival updates, schedules, reviews and discussions as the festival happens!
Latitude 53 is pleased to present the twelfth annual Visualeyez, 13-18 September 2011. Founded and
curated by Todd Janes, the six-day festival takes place at Latitude 53 and around downtown Edmonton. This year, the festival’s curatorial theme is worship—exploring facets of devotion, adoration, ceremony, obsession and the performance ritual itself.
Canada’s Annual Festival of Performance Art
In it’s twelfth year, VISUALEYEZ is Canada’s only annual performance art festival. Founded and curated by Todd Janes and produced by Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture, Visualeyez has presented over 100 artists to Edmonton-area audiences. Performance art is a multi-dimensional artistic practice involving the live presence of artists in a temporal dimension, often presented in a critical and process-oriented context. Every year this festival attracts artists from all over the country and the world by blending challenging themes and performances with a critical and celebratory atmosphere. This year we are proud to present fourteen artists from across the country who will explore the curatorial theme of food.
Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture
Our purpose is to encourage contemporary artistic practices and to foster the development and exhibition of experimental art forms. Latitude 53 provides a forum for dialogue about contemporary art practices through exhibitions, performances, readings, seminars, workshops, and interpretive programming.
Founded in 1973 by a collective of Edmonton artists, Latitude 53 is a not-for-profit artist-run centre. We provide a noncoercive environment to assure the freedom of the artist, and give the public access to new art forms. Latitude 53 supports the research and development of new artistic practices and concepts, and encourages experimentation by artists through diverse programming. While experimentation in visual culture is the emphasis of the work that Latitude 53 facilitates, we seek work in a variety of disciplines, to become a locus for experimental culture.
